Who should apply?

Undergraduate or Master’s students with a strong academic record in an accredited full-time program in computer science, computer engineering, or a closely related discipline.

What is the exact deadline for applications?

The application deadline for CMMRS 2024 is February 25, 2024 (23:59 Anywhere on Earth, UTC-12).

When will I hear back?

Notifications will be sent by end of March.

What background is expected of successful applicants?

While there is no minimal number of credit hours required, we expect attendees to be familiar with the material typically taught in the first two years of a full-time computer science/engineering program.

What if I am available for a subset of the days? Can I attend partially?

Unfortunately no. Students are expected to commit for the entire duration.

Do I have to buy my ticket myself or will it be purchased for me?

We can book your ticket or reimburse reasonable fares. Please correspond and confirm with the school staff prior to purchasing your own ticket.

What is the earliest arrival and latest departure date?

The school will provide room and board from the evening of Sunday July 28 through the morning of Sunday August 4. Attendees are welcome to stay extra time at their own expense.

Where are classes held?

The school will take place on the premises of the Max Planck Institute for Software Systems in Saarbrücken, Germany.

What kind of accommodations will there be?

Accommodations will be arranged; students should expect to room with at least one other student.

Do I need to bring a laptop?

We recommend you bring your own laptop to take notes, however this is not required.

What is the language used at the school?

All instruction and interaction will be in English.

How big will classes be / how many students will be in the program?

Approximately 90.

What would a daily schedule look like?

There will be lectures in the mornings and afternoons with breaks for snacks and lunch. Social events will be take place on (some of) the afternoons and evenings.

What will be the benefits and takeaways from attending the school?

You will be exposed to state-of-the-art research in computer science, with a focus on emerging trends. You will have the opportunity to interact one-on-one with internationally leading scientists from three of the foremost academic institutions in research and higher learning in the US and in Europe. You will get a sense of what it is like to pursue a research career in computer science.

How many references do I need?

We ask for a minimum of one letter of recommendation, and you can optionally provide the name of a second recommender.

When do you ask for letters?

We do not request recommendation letters until after the application deadline. Your recommendation writers will have one week to submit their letter after the application deadline. Please only contact us about reference letters if the application deadline has passed and your recommendation writer has still not received an e-mail.
